Hero Hedges

One of the most valuable things a gardener can do, is to have an area of hedging.

As well as making boundaries come to life, they are just so much more interesting than mundane fencing & a fascinating marker of the shifting seasons.

Hedgerows are the UK’s largest wildlife habitat and are vital for providing food, shelter and nesting sites for birds, insects, mammals and amphibians.

Hedging is also great for soil & climate health by storing carbon in the woody material.

At this time of year, bare root hedging can be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen. A hedge created from a variety of species (many of them native) such as Hawthorn, Hazel, Crab Apple, Dog Rose, Beech or Hornbeam, is not only much more economical than fencing, but can help with excess water run off and keep intruders at bay (if you select the thorny varieties).

There’s also a range of evergreen hedging available, and Plant Club members get 20% OFF a wide variety until the end of November.

Spring Flowering Bulbs

If you haven't got round to planting any spring bulbs yet for one reason or another, IT'S NOT TOO LATE. As long as the ground is workable then you can plant away!

Tulips in particular, benefit from late planting (November onwards) to minimize the risk of fungal diseases caused by warm, humid conditions.

Even early flowering species such as daffodils will still flower in spring if planted now.

All bulbs, and particularly tulips enjoy good drainage so ensure containers are slightly raised off the ground or planting areas aren't waterlogged.
