Winter Houseplant Care

Why not take the opportunity for a little houseplant health check whilst the weather is trying to make it’s mind up? It’s one thing you can tick off the list and your houseplants will be refreshed and ready for the forthcoming growing season.

Do any of your houseplants need re-potting? Key signs include: roots growing out of the drainage holes or coiled around the inside of the pot, soil drying out extremely quickly between watering or soil appearing very ‘worn/old’.

Don’t be tempted to use multi-purpose compost, it is too dense and nutrient rich for houseplants. It may also contain insect larvae & pests which can be a nuisance in the home. Houseplant, Orchid & Cacti potting mixes are lighter for better aeration and drainage.

Add liquid houseplant feed according to dosage when watering in re-potted plants.

Ensure you’re not over watering during the cooler months. There are easy to use watering indicators available if you need extra guidance.

Remove any dead leaves and check for pests & diseases.

Gnats can be dealt with by spreading a layer of natural lava based material (No-Gnats) on the plants soil surface. This deters the gnats from laying their eggs.

We have subtle houseplant fly traps to pop into your pots.

For a variety of other houseplant pests we have a ready-to-use bug killer that works on contact AND from inside the plant to control future pest attacks

If everything is looking good, then treat big leaved houseplants to a gentle dust/wipe and finish with a squirt or two of leaf shine.
