Wet + Waterlogged = WAIT

Well, the darkest depths of winter are behind us and we’re certainly pleased that the daylight hours are S-L-O-W-L-Y increasing!

However, the ground is still extremely wet and waterlogged. Tempting as it is to charge into the garden when the rain stops, this could be foolish.

Regular footfall on lawns & borders will just increase compaction and decrease aeration. Any attempt at digging or weeding will result in a mud bath. Pruning any young or tender plants leaves them vulnerable if there is still snow to come.

If your green fingers are twitching, here’s a few things you can be getting on with:

Choose which varieties of seed potatoes, onions, shallots & garlic you fancy growing this season whilst there’s still a good selection to choose from.

If you can provide some heat, protection & a bright spot then certain seeds such as basil, chillies, peppers & aubergines can be sown now.

Hardy annuals such as Sweet Peas, Cornflowers & Ammi can be sown in February.

Sort, tidy & plan - sheds, greenhouses, tools, seeds! All those areas that end up in a jumbled mess when you’re busy!

We may not have our Dahlia cutting beds anymore, but we still have a wide selection of varieties with the Summer Flowering Bulbs now in.

National Nest Box Week is approaching so check if yours need repairing or replacing in preparation for the forthcoming nesting season.
