July 2025
This month’s gardening jobs…
With the recent cooler weather and some significant rainfall, the ground has softened slightly and our water butts are replenishing.
Gardening conditions are more pleasant, so here’s a few things that may need doing in your outside space. Now that the school holidays are here, you might be able to enlist some little garden helpers too!
Keep deadheading bedding plants and repeat flowering perennials for continuous blooms until the first frosts.
Get a grip on weeds before they have chance to set seed.
Continue feeding and deadheading roses (unless you want hips through winter).
Tie-in climbers regularly to avoid a tangle and direct them!
Hedges can be regularly trimmed now that the main nesting season has passed. This will keep hedges looking tidy throughout the winter, but ensure that any cuts are made well before the risk of frosts.
Give lawns a summer feed to replace lost nutrients and encourage greening.
Summer prune trained apple & pear trees to promote good fruiting in the future.
This years whippy wisteria growth should be reduced to 5 or 6 leaves.
Remove leaves around bunches on grapevines to maximise sunlight to fruits.
Pinch out tips of climbing and runner beans when they reach the top of supports, to focus energy on producing a good crop.
Pinch out cucumber plant side shoots to just two leaves beyond any developing fruits.
Net any developing blackberries or autumn raspberries to deter feathered friends.
