Trees, shrubs, hedging and why you should change your bedding!
This is THE best time to plant trees, shrubs and hedging in particular...WHY?
By treating autumn as the primary planting season for these type of more woody plants, they will be better prepared to deal with a volatile spring or dry summer.
The ground is still warm which encourages root growth, and cool air reduces water loss from the leaves.
Plant growth above ground generally slows down during autumn & winter, so they put their energy into building strong & healthy root systems.
It also reduces pressure on mains water supply and your watering time and effort.
There's reduced competition from surrounding weeds and less nibbling insects around.
It's also time to change your summer bedding if you haven't already done so - although your summer bedding plants are probably still going strong as we haven't had any frosts yet.
Autumn/winter bedding plants will benefit from getting established before the soil becomes hard and frozen.
If you really can't bear to banish your summer plants to the compost heap, then move them to more temporary containers to create space for fresh planting in your prime spots!
