Hot Weather Watering

Now, we don’t usually have to write about this in May but the current heatwave demands a few timely tips & reminders about watering in hot weather.

Deep watering is key; water slowly and deeply so it penetrates into the soil. This approach encourages strong, deep root growth.

Timing is everything. Watering early in the morning or late in the evening helps minimise evaporation, ensuring that more water reaches the roots rather than being lost to the air. This practice not only conserves water but also allows plants to absorb moisture efficiently during cooler parts of the day.

Mulching can make a significant difference. Applying a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of your plant helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce competition from weeds. Mulch acts as a protective barrier, keeping the soil cool and moist during the hottest days.

Regularly check the soil moisture to determine when to water. The good old fashioned 'finger test' is always a good indicator. If soil feels damp then there's no need to water.

If soil feels bone dry or is shrinking away from the container sides then watering is required (probably best to sit containers in a water tray and leave to take what they want for a while).
