Daffodils bring colour and cheerfulness with the hope of warmer weather on the way. Mothering Sunday often lands within this month and with so much colour springing up it’s a great time to buy something for your mum to show her how much you care.
Lawns
- If we’ve had a warm start to the year the grass may need cutting. If so use the mower on the highest cut setting for the first few cuts.
- Prepare areas that are to be newly sown.
- Lay new turf in warmer weather.
Flowers
- Prune Roses that weren’t pruned in the autumn. New shoots should be showing so it makes it easier to tell where to cut back to. Always try to prune back to an outward facing bud.
- Divide Snowdrop clumps that haven’t already been split re-planting new clumps in a new area.
- Mulch Roses with manure and feed with a specific Rose food.
- Prune back Group 2 and Group 3 Clematis. Group 2 Clematis - Remove dead or weak stems down to a strong pair of buds. Group 3 Clematis - Prune back stems to a strong pair of buds 15-30cm from the base.
- Start off Dahlia tubers in a greenhouse.
Vegetables
- Plant First Early Potatoes at the end of the month.
- Continue to sow various vegetable plants undercover. Broad Beans, Cabbage, Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Peas are some of the varieties that can be sown now.
Fruit
- Mulch Raspberry canes with manure or well rotted compost.
- This is the last month in which it is recommended to plant new fruit trees or bushes.
- Start to spray peach trees and other susceptible fruit trees for Peach Leaf Curl.
General Care
- Plant hardy herbs outside (Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary etc.)
- Dig over beds, incorporating organic matter and feeding with a general fertiliser.
- Plan any spring planting.
